This evaluation is over: We have bought a 5 user, 5 calendar
license of WebEvent. We are still happy with this decision. WebEvent support has proven to be helpful. |
We need better calendar software. The current council calendar has been created as html file. This is both, too much work, and, impossible for other people to augment. Also, some users have asked for the list-like presentation I have used in previous years..
I would like new software to
a) Make the calendar easier to maintain
b) Allow other people than me adding events
c) Have a more flexible representation; output in a format useful
for users tools
I am experimenting with a few software packages. Look at them, but be aware
that these experimental calendars are not maintained.
I have not evaluated too many, and, am not sure which is the best one. I simply don't have the time... It is also not that much money, that perfect evaluation really matters. I must decide rather fast, because I want to be ready for this years calendar. I need your suggestions in case I overlooked something, or, you happen to be more knowledgeable.
www.brownbearsoftware.com/calcium/
brownbear running on calsnet; this runs on
a hosted community server, a free service.
brownbear on my private server. There
is nothing which wouldn't work on the council server.
Fee for 1 calendar: $60. The labels can be removed if
the license fee is paid.
Perl source available
I almost prefer it on our own server because:
It is faster (Is it really? I haven't measured
concentrics; Linuxhost is slow)
I can run backups myself
Maybe, if necessary, I can tweak the software
It is only down, when the rest of the webpage is down
too
Less different "accounts"
I did more testing
-brownbear does not run on concentrics. CGI.pm on concentrics
is too old version.
-calsnet seems to be down frequently and too slow.
greathill.com/calweb/
Nice features. However does not run on concentrics. Greathill runs
only on NT and Linux, but not Solaris. I think this might be a binary C++
program and not tweakable anyway.
www.WebEvent.com
Tested calendar on concentrics; it works.
Non-profit price in the right version $150 (5 calendars; 5 administrators)
Perl; source available. Has good support forum.
However: Has no export command. They say they will add it in the
near future.
Great potential as it can display merged calendars (but cost goes up)
Icons are kind of ugly. Left click creates new windows, yuk.
Currently this is my first choice
$100 for unlimited users
Ok features, except no list view
Sorry, the installation process failed (for security installation
problems).
www.davelozinski.com/scripts/calendar/calendar.html
$50, unlimited users. Perl, with source.
Got demo version to work on concentrics. (Some configuration problems, but
would certainly be fixable in an hour or two)
Looks good and fast but: Seems to miss import and export features.
Has good reviews
Currently my second choice

I don't like its indirect display.
HyperCal
Only indirect display

Only indirect display
www.perlcal.com $95.
No list view.
www.groveware.com
Doesn't work on solaris. If you have to ask what it costs we probably cannot
afford it.

While this has commercials and isn't appropriate for the council, they serve
LOTS of troops.

Java calendars
Many free or cheap ($100) calendars I found limit it to one version. If
a user wants to display single districts the license fee jump considerably.
We could do this possibly ourself, but I want to do the work only if
this is considered important. Easier to buy.
It would be nice to have outlook compatibility, but the web pages generated by outlook are just horrible and cause technical problems.
(An ideal choice would allow integrated representation with the personal calendars of staff members for those staff members. Such tools exist, but are in a higher price class. I feel not comfortable evaluating software which should be used by secretarial staff)
Is it worth bothering whether it works with PALM?
This is a working file: It is frequently changed for now
and probably not maintained afterwards...
Exactly: Its no more maintained
