Cub Scout Leader Basic Training ‘99

Thanks to Cub Scout Leaders at previous training courses for spending a few minutes to share their ideas for outings and activities. Successful ideas from other leaders is a valuable resource when planning your own den or pack activities. (Names and phone #s have been removerd for the web)

We recommend checking activities out before going with your cubs. Please don't forget filing a Tour Permit.

• SAN PEDRO VALLEY PARK - Pack, day hike to top of Montara Mountain. Goal: have lunch at top. A little difficult, the boys encourage each other to keep going by having short races.

• Fly kites at Montara Beach
• Ano Nuevo - see elephant seals
• Princeton Pier - watch fish being cleaned
• Pick Olallieberries
• Montara Mtn. walks
• Fitzgerald Marine reserve - tide pools
• Trout farm fishing (Lynt?) - Hwy. 92

• Angel Island Civil War re-enactment, 1st Sunday in June

• Foothill Observatory - clear Friday nites 8 - 12 pm also clear Sat. mornings 10-12 noon at Foothill College. Los Altos

• a LOCAL DUMP - learn about producing less garbage, recycling, reusing resources.
• SEWAGE TREATMENT CENTER (a.k.a. Palo Alto Water Quality Control) for Bear Cub Scouts and above
• BFI San Carlos (recycling) - to work towards their Conservation Badge

• 150 ft. (or shorter) BANANA SPLIT - great pack activity on hot day
• ROLLER BLADE - Golden Gate Park on Sundays
• SHORELINE PARK boat rentals - end of Shoreline Rd. Mt. View (Remember: this is a water activity)
• BOWLING ALLEY - earn belt loops
• ARDENWOOD HISTORIC FARM. (Commercial) on Ardenwood Blvd.. .2 mi. n. of SR 84. is a Living-history project depicting farm life from the 1870s to the I 920s. The complex contains the Patterson house, a farmyard, gardens, period shops, a picinc area and a collection of farm animals. Hay-wagon and horse-drawn rail car rides as well as guided house tours also are available. Only the picnic area is open Tues.-Wed. Thurs.-Sun. 10-4. Admission! • Deer Hollow Farm, Los Altos
• Coyote Point (look for shells)
• Edgewood Park, Redwood City - best time is Mar. or Apr. when wild flowers are in bloom. (Remark by Webmaster: as if cub scouts would care)
• Rancho del Oso Nature Center @ Waddell Creek (part of Big Basin State Park on coast. Resident naturalist who will lead nature hikes; beach, marsh, wooded areas. “Newt Nite” in Feb. or Mar. to learn about newts, frogs, etc. Camping area)
• San Pedro Park, Pacifica - Brooks Falls Trail in winter (2 hr. hike), beautiful waterfall
• Los Trancos Open Space - on Page Mill Road, Palo Alto, ~2 miles from Skyline Good for Webelos Geology badge
• Trail Trekker Hikes - Bay area prescribed hikes, boys earn patches (Remark by Webmaster:Hiking may be more appropriate for BOY scouts)
