The council webmaster has the desire but not the time to help
a youth webmaster. The council will not provide supervision nor
un-supervised server access.
Uploading (for the old server)
We have
our own tool to upload files into your directory.
(You can use standard web editors to create pages, but use our
upload tool.)
Backup
Whatever we would be hosting for you, this is only the delivery
part. If the server looses your pages you will have to provide
the contents again. You are responsible for backups yourself.
CGI (for the old server)
For security reasons we can't give general cgi scripting capability.
If you absolutely need a cgi script, you need to talk to the webmaster
about proof-reading it.
However we give you access to some cgi scripts we have.
E.g. We have our own form
mailer web script.
Password protection (for the old server)
We can set up your directories (or subdirectories) to use password
protection. The unit webmaster can add or remove individual users
and passwords by using our
own tool. More info on security.
Capitalization
Our web servers are unix workstations. That means capitalization
of file-names always matters. Even if you yourself use a PC, your
web pages names and the links must use matching capitalization.
(We recommend using all lower case.)
Reserved file names (for the old server)
Some specific "invisible" files starting with dot (like .htaccess)
are managed with our own unusual tools and should not be directly
manipulated. (What you do needs not only work correctly, but it
also must not confuse any of our tools).
Avoid files starting with underscore; such files have special
meaning for Microsoft Frontpage.
